Freycinet Lodge, in Freycinet National Park, Tasmania, has been in operation since the 1990s. The site overlooks Great Oyster Bay as well as the dramatic granite Hazard Mountains, attracting travelers who wish to relax, explore the natural diversity of one of Tasmania’s oldest National Parks and admire the breathtaking beauty of Tasmania’s east coast.
Liminal Studio was commissioned to transform the visitor experience with nine pavilions tailored to celebrate the scenic qualities of the unique setting. The Pavilions provide a point of difference to the existing 60 cabins, offering a quality, contemporary, eco-sensitive, site-specific experience.
호주 태즈매니아 주 프레이시넷 국립공원에는 90년대부터 운영돼 온 프레이시넷 산장이 있다. 오이스터 만과 화강암 산지인 하자드 산을 굽어보는 위치에 자리한 이 산장은 관광객들에게 편안한 쉼터는 물론, 태즈매니아에서 가장 오래된 국립공원에서의 자연과 태즈매니아 동해안 절경 등 다양한 즐길 거리를 제공한다.
건축가는 방문객들이 색다른 경험을 할 수 있도록 독특한 분위기의 주변 경치와 어우러지는 9개의 파빌리온 숙소를 새롭게 설계했다. 기존 60개 객실과 차별화된 파빌리온은 현대적이고 친환경적이며 현지 특성과 잘 맞도록 지어졌다.

Liminal drew inspiration from the fluid topography of the nearby bays and layered coastal granite rock formations, while paying homage to the character of the National Park they nestle into.
Floor to ceiling curved windows bring the outdoors in, emphasizing the experience of being immersed in nature. The positioning and interplay of the living room and bedroom wing form an embrace reminiscent of nearby bays, protecting the generous deck and offering privacy to the outdoor bath.
The exterior protective shell is made of Red Ironbark that is charred black – referencing the significance of fire in the bush environment, while also increasing the longevity of the timber and ensuring the pavilions are visually discreet so that any insertion into the natural landscape would be a backdrop that presented a quiet response to its immediate context. The solid form seen on approach plays an important role in the hide and reveal. The water views and the intimacy of being nestled in the bush aren’t fully realized until the front door is opened.
Offcuts of Tasmanian Oak clad the interior walls, while Blackwood and the only plywood to be manufactured locally, totally enwrap the interiors, creating a warm and completely Tasmanian experience; using and showcasing utilitarian and natural materials in innovative ways creates a unique atmosphere befitting of its setting.

건물 바닥과 천장을 잇는 곡면 통유리에는 야외 풍경이 가득 담겨 더욱 자연 속에 빠져드는 느낌을 선사한다. 굽이지는 만의 풍경이 연상되는 거실과 침실은 건물 양 끝에 적절하게 배치되어 그 사이에 있는 넓은 데크와 야외 욕조의 사생활이 더욱 보호된다.
건물 외벽은 검게 그을린 레드 아이언바크 목재로 마감됐다. 이는 산불에 대한 경각심을 일깨움과 동시에 목재의 수명을 늘리고, 새로 건축되는 파빌리온이 시각적으로 도드라지지 않고 자연스럽게 주변 환경에 녹아들 수 있게 하기 위함이다. 건물의 특징은 가까이에서만 알아챌 수 있도록 꼭꼭 숨겨져 있다. 건물을 둘러싼 해안과 숲의 아름다운 경관을 온전히 느끼기 위해서는 건물 안으로 들어서야만 한다.
건물 내벽은 태즈매니아 떡갈나무와 블랙 우드 나무, 현지에서 생산된 합판으로 마감해 따뜻하면서도 태즈매니아 현지의 느낌이 물씬 풍기는 공간을 만들었다. 또한, 실용적이고 친환경적인 재료를 다양하게 사용해 주변 환경에 꼭 맞는 독특한 분위기를 조성했다.
An experiential highlight is the netted, hammock-like balustrades. Recognizing the desire to retain the views that a standard balustrade would interrupt, Liminal devised the unique solution that provides a novel opportunity for relaxing and enjoying the incredible setting.
Diagrammatically, the living, sleeping and bathing spaces are expressed as pods, connected by the flow of the circulation and deck, emulating the landscape curves of nearby Honeymoon Bay. The spatial layout also helps in protecting the deck, offering privacy to the outdoor bath.
건물의 가장 독특한 특징은 해먹처럼 그물로 만들어진 난간이다. 건축가는 자연경관을 해칠 우려가 있는 보편적인 난간 대신, 더욱 편안히 자연을 즐길 수 있는 창의적인 형태의 난간을 고안해냈다.
거실과 침실, 욕실 공간은 마치 꼬투리 속 콩처럼 배치됐다. 근처의 허니문 만의 곡선 형태를 빼닮은 각 공간과 데크는 서로 연결된다. 이러한 공간 배치는 데크와 야외 욕조에서의 사생활을 더욱 보호해준다.
