모쉐 사프디의 싱가포르 창이 공항의 ‘주얼’, 도심속 정원으로 지역사회 중심 공항의 새 지평을 열다

Fulfilling its mission as a connector between the existing terminals, Jewel combines two environments—a marketplace and a paradise garden—to create a new community-centric typology as the heart and soul of Changi Airport. Jewel weaves together an experience of nature and an intense marketplace, dramatically asserting the idea of the airport as an uplifting and vibrant urban center which engages travelers, visitors and residents, and echoes Singapore’s reputation as “The City in the Garden”.
모쉐 사프디가 설계한 싱가포르 창이 공항의 ‘주얼’이 완공되었다. ‘주얼’은 창이 공항의 중심 공간이자 지역 사회의 구심점이 될 새 복합문화시설이다. 각 터미널을 잇는 연결 통로일 뿐 아니라 대형 상업시설과 정원이기도 하다. 각종 상업시설과 자연이 적절히 조화를 이루면서 공항을 생기와 활력이 넘치는 도시의 중심으로 거듭나게 한다. 여행자, 방문객, 지역 주민을 끌어들여 ‘도심 속 정원’이라는 싱가포르의 명성을 더욱 돋보이게 한다.
주얼은 135,700m² 크기로, 공항 운영 시설과 실내정원 및 레저시설, 각종 상점, 식당과 카페, 그리고 호텔 시설 등을 모두 포함하고 있다. 제1 터미널과는 직접, 2·3 터미널과는 보행교로 연결되어 환승객과 일반 방문객 모두에게 열려 있다. 동서남북 사방의 중심축에 설치된 정원 입구는 방문객을 유도하며 주얼의 내부시설과 다른 공항 터미널을 시각적으로 연결한다.
The 135,700m2 center includes facilities for landside airport operations, indoor gardens and leisure attractions, retail offerings, restaurants and cafés, and hotel facilities, all under one roof. Directly connected to Terminal 1 and to Terminals 2 and 3 via pedestrian bridges, Jewel engages both in-transit passengers as well as the public at large. Each of the cardinal axes—north, south, east, and west—are reinforced by gateway gardens that orient the visitors and offer visual connections between the internal program elements of Jewel and the other airport terminals.
At the heart of Jewel is the Forest Valley, a terraced indoor garden that offers many spatial and interactive experiences such as walking trails, cascading waterfalls, and quiet seating areas. Amidst more than 200 different species of trees and flora is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall —a ‘rain vortex’—showering down from an oculus in the domed roof to the Forest Valley garden seven stories below. The waterfall—at peak conditions flowing at more than 10,000 gallons per minute—aids in the cooling of the landscape environment and collects significant rainwater to be re-used in and around the building. Surrounding the gardens is a multi-level retail marketplace on five levels that access the garden via a series of vertical canyons.
주얼의 핵심 공간인 테라스형 실내 정원 ‘포레스트 밸리’는 산책로와 계단식 폭포, 조용한 좌석 등과 같은 다채로운 시설과 이색적인 경험을 제공한다. 200가지가 넘는 다양한 종류의 나무와 식물군으로 에워싸인 세계 최대 실내 폭포 ‘레인 보어텍스’는 돔형 지붕부터 7개 층 높이의 포레스트 가든 중심부로 시원하게 쏟아진다. 최대 분당 10,000 갤런의 물을 흘려보내는 폭포는 저장된 빗물을 재사용하며, 주변 환경의 온도를 낮추는 역할도 한다. 5개 층의 각종 소매 상점은 수직 협곡처럼 정원을 둘러싸고 있다.
주얼은 마치 반 잘린 도넛을 뒤집은 듯한 세미 토로이드 돔 구조를 가진다. 최대 직경은 200m이며, 정원의 가장자리를 따라 간헐적으로 지지물을 배치한 통합 구조 및 외형 시스템은 기둥 없는 내부 구조를 만든다.
5층에는 정원과 연결되며 다양한 즐길 거리가 들어선 14,000m² 크기의 ‘캐노피 파크’가 있다. 나무 사이에 걸쳐진 그물 구조물과 유리 바닥 현수교, 식물 울타리 미로, 거울 미로, 그리고 세계적인 예술가들과의 협업 작품들이 방문객의 시선을 사로잡는다.
사프디 건축사무소장 자론 루빈은 “주얼은 도시와 공항을 잇는 새로운 건축 설계를 제안한다”며 “고대 그리스의 ‘아고라’처럼 사회적 가치와 상업적 가치가 통합된, 활기 넘치는 공공영역이 될 것이다” 라고 말했다.
The geometry of Jewel is based on a semi-inverted toroidal dome roof. Measuring 200m across at the longest span, and supported only intermittently along the rim of the garden, the integrated structure and façade system allows for a near column-free interior.
On the fifth level is the Canopy Park, which includes 14,000m2 of attractions integrated within the garden spaces. These include net structures suspended within the trees, a suspended catenary glass-bottomed bridge walk, a planted hedge maze and mirror maze, and feature installations completed in collaboration with internationally acclaimed artists.
“Jewel presents a new building prototype for connecting the city and the airport,” says Jaron Lubin, Principal at Safdie Architects. “Like an Ancient Greek ‘agora,’ it aligns social and commercial values to create an animated public realm destination.”
