The new SIMAC (Svendborg International Maritime Academy) in Svendborg will be Denmark’s largest maritime education institution. Today, the industrial area south of Nyborgvej is a secluded and unused part of town, but the new masterplan will transform the area into a vibrant and innovative environment. The masterplan links the surrounding neighborhoods and establishes meaningful transitions from the city to the historic building structures of the harbor.
덴마크 최고의 해양 교육 기관으로 거듭날 스벤보르 국제 해양 아카데미가 덴마크 스벤보르 지역에 새롭게 들어선다. 새 건물의 밑그림을 구상하기 위한 공모전이 열렸고, C.F 뮐러 아키텍츠와 EFFEKT 아키텍츠가 협업해 제시한 안이 당선안으로 꼽혔다.

뉘보르바이 남부의 버려진 공업 지역에 새로운 아카데미 건물이 들어서면, 이 일대는 혁신적이고 활력이 넘치는 장소로 탈바꿈할 것이다. 인근 지역과의 접근성이 높아지고, 동시에 도시와 오랜 역사를 지닌 항구를 연결하는 통로가 된다.
단지에서 항구 산책로로 이어지며 주변 도시와도 자연스럽게 어우러진다. 건물은 가운데 십자형을 축 삼아 네 모퉁이에 시민들이 자유롭게 드나들 수 있는 공용 공간을 개방해 두었다. 부두는 학교 연구와 해양 산업을 선도하는 야외 실험실이 된다.
건물은 물리적 공간의 제한을 받지 않고 개방적이고 유연한 교육을 펼칠 수 있도록 모듈식 구조에 기반을 두고 있다. 모듈식으로 공간을 구성하면, 하중 지지 구조와 전체 설계 계획에 크게 영향을 미치지 않은 채 강의실과 회의실을 유연하게 재배치할 수 있다.

The new SIMAC is integrated into the course of the harbor promenade and the surrounding urban spaces. The building’s floor plan is designed as a cross that forms a corner to four squares, opening up to allow public access to the communal facilities. The quay itself becomes an outdoor laboratory that highlights the school’s work and maritime successes.
The architectural design is based on a modular construction grid that maximizes openness and flexibility in the physical framework of education. The construction is flexible, allowing for reconfiguration of the layouts for workshops and teaching rooms, without disturbing the load-bearing structure and logistics.

In the center of the building is an atrium that connects the building both visually and logistically across floors. Around the atrium, there are four double-height spaces that mark both the interior and exterior of the facade towards the city and the harbor and contain central functions such as a canteen, auditorium and special workshops. The staircase in the building follows these spaces, and culminates in a communal roof terrace with views of the harbor, Svendborg Sund and the city.
The interior construction is of exposed bare concrete, and the building’s floors have a robust surface that can withstand heavy use, particularly on the ground floor and in the workshops. The interior walls between the atrium and the teaching rooms include glazed sections to enable visibility and dialogue. Overall, the building has a simple and honest expression based on functionality and utilization.
The quay, the water and the adjoining urban areas invite a host of activities for both the city’s residents and for students at the new SIMAC which, together with the existing historic buildings, constitutes a new waterfront landmark in Svendborg.

건물 중앙에는 전 층을 직접적으로 연결할 뿐만 아니라 시각적으로도 소통할 수 있는 아트리움이 마련되어 있다. 그 주변으로 이중 높이의 공간이 네 군데에 자리하는데, 항구와 도시를 바라보는 건물 측면에서 안팎으로 모습을 드러내고 있다. 이 공간들은 식당, 강당, 회의실과 같은 주요 기능으로 사용된다. 공간을 둘러싸며 올라가도록 계단이 나 있고, 그 끝에는 항구와 스벤보르 순드 해협, 그리고 도시를 한눈에 전망할 수 있는 옥상 정원이 자리한다.
내부 구조는 노출 콘크리트로 구성했으며, 건물의 바닥, 특히 1층과 회의실의 바닥은 밀도 높게 사용할 때에도 잘 견딜 수 있도록 견고한 소재로 마감했다. 아트리움과 강의실 사이에는 낮은 높이의 난간을 설치해 시각적으로 탁 트이게 하고 대화도 잘 이루어질 수 있게 했다. 전반적으로 기능성과 활용성에 초점을 맞춰 간단하면서 과하지 않게 있는 그대로 표현했다.
부두와 바다, 그리고 인근 도시는 지역 거주민과 아카데미 재학생에게 다양한 활동을 제공하며, 기존의 역사적 건축물들과 함께 스벤보르의 새로운 수변 명소로 자리매김 할 것이다.
