스너그 아키텍츠, 영국의 ‘희망의 랜드마크’가 될 ‘응답의 집’ 국제 설계 공모전에 당선

Snug Architects has won the international design competition for a groundbreaking “national landmark of hope” to be located at the center of the UK.
The “Wall of Answered Prayer” (The Wall) is the vision of Richard Gamble, former chaplain of Leicester City Football Club, to build a colossal national landmark of hope.
Richard’s idea was to provoke an ongoing conversation around the purpose and value of prayer. This message will be physically realized by one million bricks – with each and every brick telling a unique story – symbolizing the Christian belief that Jesus lives, listens, and answers prayer.
The sheer scale of The Wall, in a prominent location, will place the landmark and its message at the forefront of the nation’s consciousness for generations to come.
영국 중부 지방에 들어설 희망의 랜드마크, ‘응답의 집’ 건립을 위한 국제 설계 공모전에서 스너그 아키텍츠가 당선했다.
전국 규모의 기독교 단체, ‘더 월’에서 주최한 이 공모전은 국가적인 기념 건축물을 구현하고자 마련되었다. ‘더 월’을 설립한 리처드 갬블(레스터 시티 FC의 전임 사제)은 기도의 가치와 목적에 대한 지속적인 대화를 끌어내는 기념비를 짓고자 했다. 구조물은 예수가 사람들의 기도를 듣고 응답한다는 메시지를 담고 있다.
‘더 월’은 영구적인 기념물이자 공공 예술작품이다. 눈에 잘 띄는 장소에 들어설 이 구조물은 미래 세대를 위한 국가 정신의 최전선에서 그 규모만으로도 강한 메시지를 주는 랜드마크가 될 것이다.
기독교도의 신앙을 상징하고 개개인의 독특한 사연을 들려주는 백만 개의 벽돌을 사용해 달라는 요구에 따라 설계안이 구체화 되었다. 주변 풍경을 장악하게 될 50m 높이의 아치형 구조물은 M6와 M42 고속도로 사이 40,468m2 부지에 들어설 예정이다. 차후 M42번 고속도로 옆으로 HS2 고속철도가 새로 개통되면 매주 50만 명 이상의 사람들이 오가는 길에 구조물을 감상할 수 있게 된다.
Described as a visionary, thought-provoking initiative, instigated by a group of Christians from across the UK, The Wall is to be a lasting monument, a piece of public art which incorporates the client’s requirement for a million bricks – each representing an individual story of hope and faith – to feature in the design. The 50-meter-high arching structure will dominate the landscape, situated on a strategic 10-acre site between the M6 and M42 motorways and HS2 (a new high-speed rail line) where it is expected to be seen by more than 500,000 people every week.
The winning submission was commended for its unique interpretation of the brief and appropriately challenging design, featuring dynamic geometry and a stunning representation of a möbius strip – a non-orientable surface which seemingly has no beginning and no end.
It is hoped that The Wall will be completed in time to launch alongside the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
당선안은 신앙에 대한 독창적인 해석, 그 해석에 어울리는 도전적인 디자인, 역동적이고 기하학적인 형태, 시작과 끝이 없는 무방향성의 상징인 뫼비우스 띠의 아름다운 재현이라는 심사평을 받았다.
더 월의 ‘응답의 집’은 2022년 버밍엄에서 개최되는 코먼웰스 게임(영국 연방 경기 대회)에 맞춰 개장될 것으로 기대된다.
